Book 1: The March North

Blurb: (From Book 1) Egalitarian heroic fantasy. Presumptive female agency, battle-sheep, and bad, bad odds.

Review: I couldn't resist giving this series a try after reading the setting. Have you ever wondered how the societies in some fantasy worlds don't collapse inwards and turn into an autocracy with the strongest mage at the top? Rinse and repeat this cycle every few hundred years as a new godly-powerful mage rises or the autocrat meets an untimely end? What vehicle exists to stop such a mage from taking power, and even if such a vehicle exists, what happens if it were to be corrupted? This series addresses the issue head on, and follows the Commonweal, a nation trying to exist in such a world while following democratic and egalitarian principles.

Does that not hook you in enough? Then this series will combo it with an utterly unique writing style, which results in bizarre and hilarious descriptions, and real-feeling comedic dialogue. A warning that such writing is not trivial to follow and sometimes requires an active effort. This can be quite abrupt as the series does not softly introduce you to the world and setting, but rather starts as if you're already familiar with the world's slang and nomenclature.

The series does not seem to follow a single plot thread either, with each book being relatively self-contained and having its own cast, despite the overlapping characters and linear story-line. This is maybe beneficial, because I personally struggled with the transition from the first to the second book and needed to read something else. The series is a recommend for me, and you should strongly consider giving the first book a shot.
