Book 1: Steelheart

Book 2: Firefight

Book 3: Calamity

Blurb: (From Book 1) Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics. But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his will.

Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart — the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning — and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He's seen Steelheart bleed. And he wants revenge.

Review: This for me is a near perfect example of concise fantasy series. The writing is good and doesn't spend too long expanding on things. The result is a series shorter than it could have been, but one which lacks in nothing. The setting of a post super-powered society isn't too unique by today's standards either, but it's still enjoyable as all hell to read and very well crafted.

I loved the theme of the first book, and how it was set-up as a revenge story in a near post-apocolyptic style, and then doubly loved it when the story naturally expanded from that. The story also felt more planned out than many other series. This doesn't mean it's predictable, but that after an unexpected event you link a-lot of the foreshadowing.

The characters were super solid, and I think the main cast in each book was written well on an individual level. There's really not much to complain about this book. It ticks all the boxes for me, good cast, world-building, plot, and writing. I would recommend this even if you're getting a bit drained with super-hero style content. The take's pretty unique, and a fair bit of the story is spent with non super-heroes. Big recommend from me!
